Films watched (1990s): THE WINSLOW BOY (1999); dir. & screenplay David Mamet (adapted from the play by Terence Rattigan). Starring Nigel Hawthorne, Jeremy Northam, Rebecca Pidgeon & Gemma Jones.
"No, not justice. Right. Easy to do justice. Very hard to do right."
#tbs old films watched#the winslow boy#gif#quotes#nigel hawthorne#jeremy northam#rebecca pidgeon#gemma jones#guy edwards#catherine winslow#robert morton#1990s#period drama#book adaptations#my gifs#terence rattigan#david mamet#i finally got around to watching this last year; it's been on my radar since 99#anyway in short i loved it far too much#it keeps to the play in refusing to add the described court scenes (a natural choice for a film) but also eschews theatricality#and therefore is a very naturalistic observational piece that is extremely low key but also more immediate and less 'period'#plus as ever with rattigan the sharp character studies as the case puts huge strain on the winslow family#and issues of justice and media storms that never go away#with a tiny but excellent cast#including sev fave actors. in short. it was made to appeal to me so i can't be objective#not for those who like a lot of flash bang action in their films#but absolutely excellent if you enjoy small scale character pieces beautifully done with much left to ponder after#also so many doors. the viewer is very much an observer; we are always peering round or standing in doorways

Jeremy Northam and Rebecca Pidgeon in The Winslow Boy (1999)
Dir.David Mamet
In early-20th-century England, while toasting daughter Catherine's engagement, Arthur Winslow learns that the Royal Naval Academy has expelled his 14-year-old son Ronnie for stealing 5 shillings. Father asks son if it is true; when the lad denies it, Arthur risks fortune, health, domestic peace, and Catherine's prospects to pursue justice. After defeat in the military court of appeals, Arthur and Catherine go to Sir Robert Morton, a brilliant barrister and M.P., who examines Ronnie and suggests that they take the matter before Parliament to seek permission to sue the Crown. They do, which keeps Ronnie's story on the front page and keeps Catherine in Sir Robert's ken.
*Neil North, who played the First Lord of the Admiralty in this adaptation, played Ronnie Winslow in the first adaptation, The Winslow Boy (1948).

Cosmopolis (2012)
Cosmopolis is a contradiction. It is dreadfully boring. Its 109 minutes feel so much longer than they should because for the longest time, you have no idea where the plot is going, how you’re supposed to feel and/or what anyone is talking about. Nothing seems to happen but little things inside the void get you to perk up and pay attention. You keep thinking "This is where the story will really kick off!" but you're wrong - until you're right - and when it does, only disappointment follows.
Twenty-eight-year-old billionaire Eric Packer (Robert Pattinson) is traveling across Manhattan to get a haircut but the trip is slow. Along the way, a day of poor trading destroys a large part of his wealth as anti-capitalist activists demonstrate in the streets.
For most of Cosmopolis, there isn’t much of a plot. Eric rides in his state-of-the-art luxury stretch limousine, talking to various employees and consultants who warn him his fortune is in trouble. He meets with his frigid, equally and independently wealthy wife (Sarah Gadon as Elise Packer), his bodyguard (Zeljko Kecojevic), the various women he is having affairs with and a few strangers who hold a grudge against him because of his wealth. Eric is generally uninterested in what’s happening unless it has to do with sex, his daily medical checkup, upcoming haircut appointment or the Rothko Chapel - which he wants to buy. Writer/director David Cronenberg (who bases the screenplay on the book by Don DeLillo) has something to say about the way the ultra-rich have become disillusioned from reality and how, in the end, they’re no better than anyone else. Did we need someone to remind us of what we already knew?
Eventually, you realize most of the film will be set in the limo and that even if Eric gets to his haircut appointment, it's not going to inject much excitement into this slog. I can almost guarantee that this revelation, combined with the fact that you probably don’t know anything and/or don’t care at all about currency speculation and asset management will mean you'll be bored. The diabolical thing about Cosmopolis is that it keeps teasing that something interesting might happen. There’s a pretty shocking interview, talks about an assassin targetting Packer, two sex scenes and just enough weird behavior from our protagonist to make you think “something world-changing must be around the corner”. I don’t want to discourage you from watching this film completely (though I suppose I am with my final rating), but if you read the film's opening quote and your reaction is either “What?” or “Uh-oh”, then Cosmopolis isn’t for you and if you keep watching, the conclusion is sure to make you angry.
The ratings I’ve seen critics assign Cosmopolis tell me this film has an audience. One thing’s for sure: I’m not it. The film isn’t badly made, it’s just so hard to get involved in its “story” and protagonist that the effort never feels worth it, particularly considering how long the film takes to say so little. 'After a few years in limbo, the BAFTAs finally found a host to replace the much-missed Stephen Fry in David Tennant. The Doctor Who actor proved an amiable and funny emcee, although much of his humor would have gone way over the non-Brits in the audience, starting with a lengthy filmed skit riffing on his BBC TV series Staged, co-starring Michael Sheen...
...there were lots of low-key but memorable moments, like Oppenheimer’s Robert Downey Jr., dressed in a gray tail suit to collect his Best Supporting Actor award recalling his life in 30 seconds (half it ran thus: “When I was 15, I wanted to be Peter O’Toole. When I was 25, I worked for Richard Attenborough with Anthony Hopkins. When I was 35, I finally understood why he thought Tony would be a better role model for me than Peter”).
Da’Vine Joy Randolph was similarly charming on accepting her Best Supporting Actress award, swooning over presenter Chiwetel Ejiofor and bringing her Holdovers co-star Paul Giamatti to tears when she told him, “I cry every time I see your name.” Equally emotional were June Givanni, receiving this year’s Outstanding Contribution award; Samantha Morton, whose BFI Fellowship was awarded after filmed testimony from Tom Cruise; and the whole audience, who went wild for Still’s Michael J. Fox who handed out the Best Film award to Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer...'
